Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson

Originally serialized and later published as a book in 1883, but taking place sometime in the mid-1700s, Treasure Island for all intents and purposes created the pop culture pirate. Peg legs, parrots, the Black Spot, tropical islands, treasure maps, X marks the spots, fifteen men on a dead man's chest, and, indirectly, via adaptation "talking like a pirate," all come back to this tale of Jim Hawkins and his surprisingly complicated relationship with Long John Silver aboard the Hispaniola.
